External DVD Drive

An external DVD drive is a device that you can plug into your computer if it lacks its own DVD drive, or if you're looking to upgrade your existing DVD drive. A lot of computers, especially stock computers or computers that you build yourself, do not come with external, or even internal, DVD drives.

This is a rather new feature, and one that either comes with a more custom built computer or a computer that is of a higher-end. But, luckily for you, external DVD drives are not too expensive, and for just a small investment in hardware and software, you can be ready to have an external DVD drive in your computer! 

You can get external DVD drives for both PC and Mac computers, and you can even get them to work on older model computers. However, if you are thinking of buying a new external DVD drive for your computer, then here are some things to think about. First of all, you will need to consider what price range you are going to try to shop in. Are you going to buy a name brand DVD drive that can support more, or are you going to go with the cheaper, bare-bone systems? Any of these will work, but some of them will have advantages over the others.

Another thing to think about is making sure that the external DVD drive you are looking for can burn cd RW. This might not be a big thing for you, but trust me… if you buy one that cannot do this, you will regret it. It is so handy to be able to burn on everything, just in case. So, whatever you do, make sure that your external DVD drive can handle all formats and disk types.

And finally, price. Price is going to be a pretty hefty consideration when you are shopping for external DVD drives (also called a portable or usb dvd drive). It will probably shape your decision as far as brand and quality, if not even more. In fact, the bigger your budget is, the higher you will probably buy… but if you are like most people, you will be looking for the cheapest price on the model that you want. If this describes you, then here are some things that you can do that may help you in your search.

First of all, shop online for your new external USB DVD drive. This will help you on several levels. For one, it will allow you to be able to compare prices easily when you shop.  Two, it will help you when you want to know more about a particular model, because you will probably be able to access consumer reports and customer reviews a lot easier online. In fact, you SHOULD do this before buying an external DVD drive, because some models (especially cheaper ones) do not always perform quite up to standards.

But, whatever happens, make sure that you get an external DVD drive that does everything you need it to do. You might need to pay a little extra to get something that will last, but it will be worth it down the road.
